ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection)

In traditional IVF treatment, sperm and egg cells are brought together in the laboratory and fertilization is expected to occur spontaneously. This method in IVF treatment is called classical IVF. In the case of male-induced infertility, embryo formation may not occur if no additional intervention is made for the union of sperm and egg. If the number, motility or shape of the sperm are not in the ideal parameters, it can reduce the chance of fertilization. In this case, the microinjection method called ICSI is used in order not to leave the union of the sperm and the egg to chance.

ICSI can only be considered as an effective technique used in IVF treatment to increase the likelihood of fertilization. It does not cause changes in the basic stages of IVF treatment. You can read my content to get information about IVF Treatment Stages.

The cytoplasm is the gel-like substance located in the middle of the egg. Instacytoplasmic is a term that refers to the area where sperm injection takes place.1 In the ICSI method, the selected highest quality sperm cell is injected into the cytoplasm of the egg cell under the guidance of a microscope using a special glass needle. In the ICSI method, the sperms injected into the egg are selected by evaluating their morphology and motility.2

In What Cases Is ICSI Performed?

ICSI is performed when,

  • Sperm quality is low,
  • Sperms fail to fertilize the egg,
  • It stands out as a technique used in cases associated with male-induced infertility, such as not being able to obtain sperm from azoospermia patients with conventional sperm collection techniques.

You can find detailed information about Male Infertility here.

Although it is associated with male-induced infertility, the ICSI technique may become a necessity rather than a preference if traditional IVF does not yield results, egg quality is not very good, frozen eggs or frozen sperm are used in the treatment.

Success Rates of ICSI

It should not be assumed that with the ICSI procedure, 100% of the eggs will be fertilized and the formation of quality embryos is certain. Scientific studies show that the fertilization rate of eggs varies between 50% and 80% with the ICSI technique. The rate of occurrence of pregnancy with embryos obtained by ICSI is the same as with the traditional IVF method.4
