) Intralipid Serum Treatment in IVF

In most cases of male and female infertility, including unexplained infertility, IVF treatment can be utilized. IVF treatment consists of basic stages such as stimulation of the ovaries, harvesting of eggs, fertilization of eggs with the sperm harvested from the male and the transfer of the fertilized eggs into the uterus. The main purpose of the treatment is to create the highest quality embryos, to achieve pregnancy by transfering these high-quality embryos in the uterus and to achieve a healthy birth eventually.

Although very advanced techniques are used within the IVF treatment, 100% success rate is still not possible. Sometimes, even if the best quality embryos are transfered, there may be problems in the transfer process, and although there is no obvious problem in the expectant mother, pregnancy may not occur. We can replicate these scenarios. One of the factors that can cause IVF treatment to end in failure is the expectant mothers immune system.

In scientific studies, data have revealed that the immune system may interfere with the transfer process and that women's immune system responses may be the culprit for repeated transfer failures.1

Natural killer cells are regulated by the immune system. In women with immune system problems, natural killer cells may be overly active. In some cases, the immune system may perceive the embryo as an invader in the body and give an abnormal response. When this occurs, immune system cells attack the embryo to protect the body.  Studies offer data indicating that intralipids can help disable natural killer cells, allowing the embryo to attach to the uterine wall and grow normally.

In order to prepare the immune systems of the expectant mothers for pregnancy and the changes that occur with pregnancy, intralipid serum therapy can be added to the IVF treatment process. The serum, which is injected into the body intravenously, contains purified soybean oil, egg phospholipids, glycerol and water.2

Who Is a Suitable Candidate for Intralipid Serum Therapy?

Intralipid serum therapy, which is one of the auxiliary methods used to increase success in IVF treatment can be applied to expectant mothers who,

  • have weak immune systems,
  • have a history of recurrent miscarriages,
  • who are relatively older,
  • Who had unsuccessful results in previous IVF trials despite the transfer of high-quality embryos.

Intravenous intralipid therapy in IVF is initiated before embryo transfer and continues until certain weeks of pregnancy. The treatment lasts a minimum of two hours. Patients who are allergic to soy or eggs which are the components of the serum should inform the physician beforehand.
