IVF Glossary

AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone)

AMH is a hormone secreted by small follicles in the ovaries that provides insight into ovarian reserve. It is measured through a blood test and serves as an indicator of a woman’s current egg count.

Related terms: Ovarian Reserve · FSH · Antral Follicle Count · Premature Ovarian Insufficiency

Antral Follicle Count (AFC)

The antral follicle count is a measure of ovarian reserve obtained by counting the small follicles visible in the ovaries during an ultrasound. The result provides insight into ovarian reserve and the potential response to medication.

Azoospermia (Absence of Sperm in Semen)

Azoospermia is the condition where sperm cells are not found in semen. Determining the cause and choosing the appropriate method requires further evaluation.

Beta hCG

Beta hCG is the blood test used to measure the pregnancy hormone secreted after embryo implantation. This hormone, called human chorionic gonadotropin, is first secreted by the cells surrounding the developing embryo and later by the placenta.

Blastocyst

A blastocyst is an advanced stage of embryo development reached approximately five to six days after fertilization.

Related terms: Inner Cell Mass · Trophectoderm · Frozen Embryo Transfer · Embryo Grading

Fertilization

Fertilization is the process in which the egg and sperm combine and the embryo begins to form.

Related terms: Microinjection · Blastocyst · Embryo Transfer

Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET)

Frozen embryo transfer is the process of thawing a previously frozen and stored embryo and placing it into the uterus. In an IVF cycle, embryos that are not transferred and have suitable development can be stored using a rapid freezing method called vitrification. This allows future transfer without the need for a new medication and egg retrieval process.

Related terms: Embryo Transfer · Blastocyst · Embryo Grading · Endometrium

Embryo Grading

Embryo grading is the classification of embryos according to their developmental quality based on their appearance. This evaluation helps in selecting a suitable embryo. A grade is an indicator of probability and does not guarantee pregnancy on its own.

Related terms: Blastocyst · Embryo Transfer · Inner Cell Mass

Embryo Transfer

Embryo transfer is the procedure of placing an embryo developed in the laboratory into the uterus using a thin catheter. The day and number of embryos to be transferred vary according to the individual, and this decision is made by the treatment team.

Related terms: Blastocyst · Frozen Embryo Transfer · Endometrium · Implantation

Endometrium (Uterine Lining)

The endometrium is the layer covering the inner surface of the uterus where the embryo implants. The way the endometrium is prepared varies depending on the individual and the treatment plan.

Related terms: Embryo Transfer · Implantation · Progesterone

Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI)

Premature ovarian insufficiency is the decrease or loss of ovarian function before the age of 40.
It may occur with findings such as irregular or absent menstruation, decreased AMH levels, and increased FSH levels.

Related terms: AMH · FSH · Ovarian Reserve

FSH (Follicle-Stimulating Hormone)

FSH, or Follicle-Stimulating Hormone, is a reproductive hormone secreted by the pituitary gland in the brain that supports follicle development and egg maturation in women and sperm production in the testes in men.

Related terms: AMH · Ovarian Reserve · Estradiol · Antral Follicle Count

Follicle

A follicle is a small fluid-filled sac in the ovary that contains an egg. Not every follicle produces a mature egg, and this is an expected situation. Follicle monitoring helps determine the timing of the trigger injection and egg retrieval.

Related terms: Antral Follicle Count · Trigger Injection · Egg Retrieval · Estradiol

Gonadotropin

Gonadotropins are injectable medications that stimulate the ovaries and allow multiple follicles to develop. During treatment, close monitoring is performed with ultrasound and hormone tests.

Related terms: Follicle · FSH · Trigger Injection · OHSS

HSG (Hysterosalpingography / Uterine X-ray)

HSG is a medicated imaging method used to evaluate the inside of the uterus and the openness of the fallopian tubes. The openness of the tubes provides information for natural pregnancy chances and some treatment decisions.

Related terms: Endometrium · Embryo Transfer

Implantation

Implantation is the process in which the transferred embryo attaches and settles into the uterine lining. This process is associated with many factors such as embryo quality, uterine environment, and timing. Whether implantation has occurred is evaluated with a beta hCG test performed one to two weeks after transfer.

Related terms: Embryo Transfer · Endometrium · Beta hCG

Microinjection (ICSI)

Microinjection is an IVF method in which a single sperm is directly injected into the egg in the laboratory to achieve fertilization. The method is mostly preferred in cases of male-factor infertility.

Related terms: Fertilization · Azoospermia · Embryo Transfer · Micro TESE

OHSS (Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome)

OHSS is a condition that may occur when the ovaries respond excessively to stimulating medications.
When the ovaries react more than expected due to medications used for egg development, symptoms such as abdominal bloating, nausea, and discomfort may occur.

Related terms: Trigger Injection · Gonadotropin · Egg Retrieval

Ovarian Reserve

Ovarian reserve is the concept that refers to the number and quality of eggs remaining in a woman’s ovaries.

Related terms: AMH · FSH · Antral Follicle Count · Premature Ovarian Insufficiency

Estradiol (E2)

Estradiol is an estrogen hormone secreted by the ovaries and used in monitoring follicle development. The value is evaluated together with ultrasound findings.

Related terms: Follicle · FSH · Gonadotropin

PGT (Preimplantation Genetic Testing)

PGT is a test in which several cells taken from an embryo before transfer are examined genetically.
The test may help in selecting a suitable embryo, but it is not necessary for every couple and does not guarantee a healthy pregnancy on its own.

Related terms: Blastocyst · Embryo Grading · Embryo Transfer

Progesterone

Progesterone is the hormone that prepares the uterine lining for pregnancy and supports embryo implantation.

Related terms: Endometrium · Embryo Transfer · Beta hCG

TESE / Micro-TESE

TESE is a procedure in which sperm is obtained directly from testicular tissue through surgery in cases where there is no sperm in semen. Micro-TESE is a form of this procedure performed with the help of a microscope, where areas likely to contain sperm are searched in more detail.

Related terms: Azoospermia · Microinjection

Egg Retrieval (OPU)

Egg retrieval is the procedure in which mature eggs are collected from the ovaries using a thin needle.
The collected eggs are taken to the laboratory and prepared for fertilization.

Related terms: Trigger Injection · Follicle · Fertilization · OHSS
